COLLISION WARNING SYSTEM

COLLISION WARNING SYSTEM

collision warning system (also known as a pre-crash systemforward collision warning system (FCW), or collision mitigation system) is an advanced driver-assistance system designed to prevent or reduce the severity of collisions. Let’s explore how it works:

  1. Function:
    • The collision warning system acts like an ever-vigilant guardian angel, watching for potential trouble.
    • It provides visualaudible, and/or tactile alerts to warn a driver of an impending collision with a car or an object directly in its forward path.
    • The system detects a potential collision with a vehicle ahead and alerts the driver.
    • Some systems also include pedestrian detection, warning the driver if a pedestrian is in front of the vehicle123.
  2. Interaction with Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB):
    • Although the collision warning system will not automatically stop a car, it often works in concert with automatic emergency braking (AEB).
    • If the driver does not respond in time to the warning, AEB will automatically apply the brakes to prevent or mitigate a collision.
  3. What to Look for:
    • When buying a car, especially if it’s a used model, check to make sure it has both FCW and AEB.
    • Some automakers use similar names for both systems, which can be confusing.
    • Look for systems that allow you to adjust the timing of FCW (early, standard, or late) to suit your preference.
    • Automakers are committed to making FCW and AEB standard in new cars beginning September 1, 2022, but some models still lack them as standard equipment1.

Remember, collision warning systems enhance safety by providing timely alerts and assisting drivers in avoiding potential collisions
